COMMENTS - Rosarito On Line

In this section I pretend to make comments on the good and bad things that happen either to me or people that surround me. If you wish to participate let me know about it!

Where do you think the famous and blockbuster movie "Titanic" was filmed?

No were else but Rosarito Beach (south of the town next to "Popotla", the fisher town). There you will find some arches of a failed project that was supposed to be a suburb around the 60's. Anyway, there is enough news and comment on the other media to be mentioned here.

SAGA OF THE WEEK!

This is dedicated to all you people who like to go to computer expos and fairs and similar events you'll like the following real story about a certain Compoter Expo that takes place in San Diego around these days (gat some popcorn for this one...).

Everything started out around 1993, when in San Diego, California someone came up with an idea to have a computer fair to create a center of reunion with customers and providers and also to give out seminars and courses. Everything went well (I swear, I was there). This was called the San Diego Computer Fair, and it was organized by the San Diego Computer Society and Computor Edge magazine. I liked it so much that I decided to give back and be a part of this, so I wanted signed for voluntary work for next years fair.

Well, in 1994, I got the news in and ad in the magazine mentioned above that they needed volunteers for that years fair, so I grabbed a cab, a trolley, and a bus to go to the offices of Computor Edge (all the way to San Diego, 3 hour trip from Rosarito) and I signed up as a volunteer; cool, I got my ID, a tee shirt, and my schedule. This and some talk about what to do in case to manage situations and such. I got to be a Learning Center Instructor with knowledge in DBase III Plus (cybernetic salutes go out to Dean Smith and Susan "yeah-that's -my-real-name" Hacker who coordinated the Learning Center that year {thanks for the pizza Dean}). This happened in the San Diego Concourse Center in downtown. Everything was cool, I met people, I got to learn a lot, and I also got a sponsor for a years membership in the San Diego Computer Society (A cybernetic salute to Al Roshaleu for this). Deep inside me I felt great and I signed up for next year's fair.

Guess what? in 1995 it was not at the Concourse Center but at the San Diego Conventions Center, and it wasn't going to be a computer fair anymore but the California Computer Expo. Said and done, that year, I met even more people and I decided to take double turns to help everyone out so I became the "Seminar Monitor" that year, cool, got to check many seminars out and also learn from those. Apart from all that, and got a few prices on the raffles, one friday the Director from the "InfoSistemas" Tijuana magazine found out about me and made me and interview about me and what I did on the Expo (they had to drag me out of a Seminar I was monitoring for this to take place), he also invited me to lunch (we killed a "gyro" in Horton Plaza) and gave me the oportunitty to be a reporter for his magazine (stupid me, I did not took the chance to do that, I'll have to give him a call to see what's up). On a saturday, which is the most busy day of the fair; they looked for me again this time the Telemundo network we're looking for me to make me another interview (since I was the only Mexican english-spanish bilingual volunteer in all the Expo to my knowledge). The interview took place (and I never knew what channel or time it came on), I went back to work and like last year it was all thrills and good times. I won the love and respect of many people.

So finally in 1996 I signed up again and this time I moved up to "Seminar Tech" (computer repair guy around the Seminar areas). This time I decided to take who was my Fiancé then to go get the schedues, tee shirts and all that. So I took the opotunitty to ask Deborah Slingerland (who coordinated the volunteers that year and was the Manager of some sort at Computor Edge) if she could tag along with me that year (I was working on my own then and I had my Fiancé as an Apprentice Tech), and in a very shitty and snoby way:

DS        - Ok, but does she speak english?
WMD    - Not much, but there are plenty of spanish speaking people that go to the Expo...
DS        - *shaking her head and making a wry face* No I don't think so, she's of no use to me.

...Then and there my Fiancé got pissed, even if she didn't speak english very well, she understood it perfectly. Deborah tool this chance and in a very subtle way called her an ignorant dumbass. This got me furious and my Wife even more...

WMD    - But she's going to be with me all the time, she will asist me...
DS        - *pressed her lips toghether like after tasting lemon* No, I cannot accept that. But if you like I can give her a complementary Seminar Passport so she can be with you at the Expo.

We accepted the passport with a frown, and that afternoon we had a strong discussion for the first time (and almost breaking my relation). The time of the Expo came about and we went to San Diego, but we did NOT assist there, and I didn't either participated there; they missed the oportunitty to make this an International Event just by some envy, prejudice and racism. the only thing we did was to stroll near the event just to take a peek and the moment, and we went there 'incognito'. Maybe this could have been forgiven but NOT forgotten. Deborah Slingerland, thanks for nothing. I gave plenty to that event all those years without getting a penny and on the contrary wasting some on the trips. That would have been an excellent oportunutty for all.

A special Cybernetic Salute goes out to all the GOOD people of Computor Edge and the San Diego Computer Society.

TIP: Say no to racism and prejudice, it hurts other people and you lose oportunitties that may never come back!

Are you a victim of racism or prejudice? Send your story!

This one goes out to the incompetent baggage department of AeroMéxico. Ok so an Engineer Mr: Gerardo Guillen Salinas (no relation to Carlos Salinas de Gortari) from LAPEM comes to Rosarito to give us some courses on Quality Assurance so he flies in with his wife and instead of carrying his luggage around (thing he does always) he decided this time to check the luggage in with the baggage department, ok, so he does that and everything is going great until he is in flight and the captain calls out on the inflight PA system:

C    - Attention passengers: some of the luggage with arrive shortly in the next flight behind us, we thank you for your comprehention and enjoy your flight.

He arrives in Tijuana (Rosarito has no airport), and his luggage does not... pissed off, he went to speak with the local Aeroméxico Manager and tod him about the problem:

GG        - Look here mister, your and your baggage dept. are a fraud and cheaters, why the hell didn't you told us about the luggage before the flight? I have to work and I have no money to buy clothes with. So pay up man or I'm sueing!

Mg.       - Were so sorry abput your inconvinience, here's $300 pesos (about 35 US dollars), and we'll deliver your luggage once it comes in.

GG        - $300?! You're nuts! I can´t buy clothes with this shit, I need more! I have to work, and I'm not asking for a taylored suit, but at least I have to be presentable, I won't accept $300 pesos.

Finally the Engineer received $700 pesos (divide that by 8.5, that was the rate in dollars then...), with that he bought some pants, a shirt, socks, etc. He arrived sunday in the morning and got his clothes until tuesday afternoon, talk about lousy service...

A Cybernetic Salute goes out to Eng. Gerardo Guillen.

TIP: If you can carry it , do so. Don´t fall victim to lousy baggage service of Aeroméxico!

SAGA OF THE WEEK!

So, I happened to visit my mom this weekend, and while I was there with my Wife (a cybernetic salute to her and my mom) my mom told me that she misses me because since I got married no one is home to sharpen the knifes well enough, so I did not wanted to loose ground there, so I took the sharpener and a big-ass chef's knife, and I started to sharpened it.

My Wife gave me the look, the one that says "you're gonna cut yourself dumbass, so you better leave it alone", I continued; mom told me that she tried to sharpened herself but it was still not finished well enough, so I wanted to give it the final touch to the tip and there it happened, I slashed my pinky finger, the one that types "Q - A - Z", by instinct I let go of the sharpener and I don't remember exactly what I did to the knife that I just held my finger so I could stop the bleeding. They gave me first aid ("you peabrain, I told you so, go wash that finger" and they applied iodine). Taking a good look, the cut went right to the bone in the last joint of the pinky finger.

Later in the day, after shopping for food, my new pair of Guess pants got stained in blood, the bleeding did not stop, my Wife told me: "It will be good if you go to the Red Cross to get your finger sewed". But those were only words, the only thing I did was strap on a band aid. Next morning I went to the medic's office in the CFE plant and the doctor told me that the finger cannot be sewn anymore because its rotten now, I can only do a daily cleanup, so she did. And because of that now I can't type well and I'm desperate to do so. (Cybernetic Salutes to: Dr. Hilda Huazo, Bro. Alonso Medrano and Bro. Alfredo Barrios who I found at the medic's office).

TIP: If it does not need fixing or if you do not know how, don't touch it!
